Anna Payne - Portfolio of Works

It is wonderful to work surrounded by the pulse of nature. I feel there is a unique vitality and energy when painting a scene that is constantly evolving and changing.
This collection will soon be available on ebay.

There is truly a unique brillance in the skies over the American Southwest and subtle colors throughout the southwest landscape that invite an artist to paint. The soft grey-green of sage in spring and, of course, the wonderful variety of texture and reds in the rock formation. The dark greens of pinyon trees against red canyons which reach up into expansive deep turquoise skies. I especially enjoy filling my palette with these wonderful colors.

I have lived and traveled a great deal throughout America and have had the opportunity to capture both in the studio and "en plein air" this countries magnificent scenery. The wonderful earth tones of the woods of New England, vibrant with color in autumn, to the lush gardens and beaches of the south. I strive to impart into a painting the emotional response that stirred me to want to capture a scene in paint. Not only the scene but the light at a particular time of day, the very air around me. The essence of that time and place.

A Still Life though it depicts inanimate objects, if successful, evokes an emotional response from the viewer. That is why from the selection and placement of objects to the thickness of paint on a highlight, all aspects of a still life take careful artistic consideration. I am drawn to things of the earth that have there own natural beauty and their own story to tell. I particularily like to encoorporate objects that are handmade or have a history. Flowers are always a joy to paint especially if just picked from the garden, fragrent and dusted with morning dew.

I believe we are all drawn to the sea. As an artist, I have always tried to capture that "pull" that we feel when we breath in sea air or watch the ocean tide swirling
over white sand beaches. The very atmosphere is absorbed in reflected color. The same scene can change from Carribean blue to "Payne's" grey in an instant. I try to paint the very essence of the natural wonder that is spread before me. It may be a scene that is in continual change as I paint "en plain air" or a painting that needs refinement in the studio either way I find seascapes capture my soul.
